One of my final first year briefs was to develop designs for a campaign that will help to establish the idea of ‘northern design’ in the minds of a group or community of my choosing. I wanted my message to appeal to Southerners travelling up North purely for a weekend of drinking and boozing with their mates. These people only see Northern city’s during the night and take back the image with them that it is in fact ‘grim up north’ –which is something I aimed to change with this project. My primary focus was the beaches and the often overlooked beauty they hold.
I wanted to show these people that the North shouldn’t just be known for a place to get a good kebab after a night out, it should be known for its fish and chips, for its vast open beaches. I wanted them to take this image away with them and keep it in the back of their minds as a place they’d want to bring their children so they too can experience the beauty of the North.
For my final outcomes I developed a poster series using my own photographs that I had taken around the North East. I produced 3 pairs of posters using the phrase ‘FROM THE..’ ‘TO THE..’ to highlight contrasts between what the North is known for, and the hidden gems there is to discover at its beaches.
